What is Adobe Reader?

Adobe Reader, also known as Adobe Acrobat Reader, is a free software package produced by Adobe Systems, Inc. It lets you view, download, and print many Vanguard® publications in Portable Document Format (PDF). Adobe Reader also lets you print other forms, such as IRS 1099 tax forms, in Forms Data Format (FDF). You must have a recent version of Adobe Reader installed on your computer to take advantage of these features.

What versions of Adobe Reader work best with Vanguard.com?

Not all versions of Adobe Reader work equally well with our site. For best results, we recommend the following:

Windows users:

  • Adobe Reader 7.0 and higher for downloading and viewing PDF files and viewing FDF files.

Macintosh OS X users:

  • Adobe Reader 7.0 and higher on Mac OS X 10.4 for downloading and viewing PDF files and viewing FDF files.

We recommend that you install only one version of Adobe Reader at any given time, and that you run the most recent version available for your operating system. For more information on what browsers and operating systems we support, visit our Browser guide.

How do I download and install Adobe?

You can download Adobe Reader directly from the Adobe website. Depending on the version of Reader you're installing and your connection speed, the process may take up to 90 minutes. If you have an older version of Reader already installed, uninstall it before upgrading.

To download and install the software, follow the instructions on Adobe's website. Before returning to our website to download and access forms, please launch Adobe Reader and agree to the license agreement. If prompted to automatically configure your browsers, click OK to make Adobe Reader the default PDF and FDF file-type handler.

How do I configure Adobe Reader as a plug-in so that PDF files display in my Web browser window?

A plug-in is a small piece of software that lets you open and view files within your browser window instead of as a separate application. Adobe Reader will automatically install itself as a plug-in on most browsers.

We recommend that you upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader before attempting to configure your software.

Both Windows and Macintosh

You should only have one version of Adobe Reader installed on a machine. If you have more than one version, please uninstall all versions, then download and install the latest version.

Windows

Adobe's website provides instructions for configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer and America Online to view PDF files within the browser window.

If you are using the Firefox web browser and it does not automatically display PDF files within the browser window, please try upgrading or reinstalling the latest version of Firefox. (Visit the Browser guide page for more information.)

Mac OS X 10.4 and higher

When you install Adobe Reader 7, the plug-in should be installed automatically in the Library/Internet Plug-ins folder. (Note that this is the folder on the top directory of the hard drive, not the Library folder in your Home directory.) If you do not see the plug-in in that location, please follow these steps:

  1. Launch Adobe Reader. (Note that no window will open but the menu bar at the top of the screen will change.)
  2. Click the Help menu and choose Detect and Repair.
  3. Make sure Adobe PDFViewer is checked.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. When prompted that missing components were repaired, click OK.

The plug-in will only work with the Safari Web browser. (For more information, see the Adobe website.) All other browsers will prompt you to download PDF files to your computer, then open them using Adobe Reader. This should not interfere with your ability to download and print most forms on our website.

What do I do when I'm prompted to install Acrobat Reader and I already have a PDF viewer installed?

When you attempt to access a document, we run a check on your system so that we can confirm that you have Adobe Reader. This check is necessary to comply with electronic signature legislation. Depending on your Adobe Reader configuration, our current check may not be able to detect your version of Adobe Reader.

When we cannot detect Adobe Reader, you should get a prompt that reads: "You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view PDF documents. We were unable to find this application on your system. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, click OK. If you do have the application properly installed, click Cancel."

If you know that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader or a similar PDF viewer, click Cancel. We will set a cookie on your system (so we don't need to bother you by asking about this computer again) and will route you to the PDF file.

Please note that these steps will allow you to access PDF files, but in order to access tax forms and other FDF files, you will need to configure your computer to read these special files.

If I'm experiencing difficulty viewing forms and I have Adobe Reader installed, what troubleshooting steps can I take?

There are a number of steps you can take to check your Adobe Reader configuration and its link to your Web browser. Please look for the issue you are experiencing below and then follow the instructions provided.

I get a message that the file I'm attempting to open doesn't begin with "%PDF" or I've configured my browser as described above and I'm still receiving errors.

Please verify that the Display PDF in browser option is enabled in the Acrobat Reader.

Windows

To check this setting in Adobe Reader 7.0 and higher:

  1. Launch Adobe Reader.
  2. Click Preferences in the Edit menu.
  3. Select Internet from the left menu.
  4. Make sure that Display PDF in browser is enabled.
  5. Select JavaScript from the left menu.
  6. Make sure that Enable Acrobat JavaScript is checked.
  7. Click OK to save the settings.
  8. Close Adobe Reader.

Macintosh

To check this setting in Adobe Reader 7 and higher:

  1. Launch Adobe Reader.
  2. Click Preferences in the Adobe Reader menu.
  3. Click Internet in the left navigation bar.
  4. Make sure Display PDF in Browser is checked.
  5. Make sure Check browser settings when starting Reader is checked.
  6. Click JavaScript in the left navigation bar.
  7. Make sure Enable Acrobat JavaScript is checked.
  8. Click OK to save the settings.
  9. Quit Adobe Reader.

When I try to view a form, I get a blank page.

This can occur when the plug-in for Adobe Reader has become corrupt or when multiple versions of Adobe Reader are installed. Uninstall any previous versions of Adobe Reader and reinstall the latest version.
